Description

This is my first post here on GFXartist.com!!!

I did this painting recently for a client. I was given a writen brief, describing the character and setting, as well as certain style guidelines (dramatic, dynamic, colorful, gritty, etc.) The character and scene captured my imagination, so I took the concept and ran with it - until I ended up with this image!

You could call this piece 2-and-a-half-D, because I created a 3D mockup of the scene in 3ds max and then painted over it in Photoshop.

This painting was a valuable learning experience for me, as well as a personal test of my abilities. I set my goals high on this one, pushing myself to create an image as detailed and polished as I could. What do you think? Peace,

  • me

I'd suggest playing with the machine gun in PS a bit too, it looks a bit too 3D there. Still, this mix doesn't look bad at all.

Thanks for all the positive feedback, I really appreciate it! Slapo, I agree, of all the elements in the image, the gun looks the least painterly.

Welcome to GFX first!
Maybe I feel a little rigid the image, but nice use of colours and dynamics.

It's a very dynamic composition with crazy-neat perspective, but I think you should dirty it up a bit! Everything is very crisp and clean, whereas I would expect a lot of grime and dents and all kinds of fun wear and tear. It's almost too polished. :p

Hi sanhueza,

Welcome to gfx, and what a beautiful piece! The coloring is great and I somewhat agree with chickenfingers but I still love it as-is. The one thing I would crit is your dominance. The gun turret and the officer seem to be competing for my attention and my eye can't seem to relax on just one. I'm really looking forward to seeing your other pieces.

Thanks for the ideas, I'll be sure to keep those things in mind on my next piece! This painting is a departure from the work I usually do, which is mostly characters with simple (or no) backgrounds. Working mostly in the game industry, I've done lots of 3D models and character animations, but haven't had much opportunities to work on full-blown illustrations. I'm looking forward to doing more compositions that are fully detailed and realized like this one. For now, if you want to see some examples of my previous work, check out: www.sanhueza.com

Thanks for all the warm welcomes, I'm glad that the fruits of my labor have been received so well! :) Yes, I looked at photos of Clint from various movies while painting the face. I was instructed by the client to "make him look like Clint Eastwood."
